openEHR's dual-model architecture

Source for the Reference Model / archetype-and-template separation that distinguishes openEHR from a conventional application.

openEHR’s specifications define a two-level (“dual-model”) architecture: a small, stable Reference Model implemented directly in software, and a separate layer of archetypes and templates — reusable, clinician-authored definitions of specific clinical concepts, such as a blood-pressure reading or a discharge summary — that can be created, versioned, and revised without changing the underlying software. This is the specification’s own architectural description, published by the openEHR Foundation, and is the technical basis for describing openEHR as a data-modeling standard rather than an application.
